Hot-dip galvanising
Steel is dipped in molten zinc after fabrication, coating inside and out. The best base protection for outdoor steel.
Pre-galvanised tube
Zinc-coated before cutting and welding, so cut ends and welds need touch-up with zinc-rich paint.
Powder coating
Gives colour and a hard finish. Over bare steel it relies on the coating staying intact. Over galvanising (a duplex system) it lasts much longer.
Paint systems
Primer and topcoat over cleaned steel. Easier to touch up on site but needs repainting more often.
Corrosion and Coastal Sites
- Within a few kilometres of the sea, salt air attacks bare edges, welds and scratched coatings first.
- Ask for hot-dip galvanising or a duplex system for coastal and industrial sites.
- Base plates and post bottoms sit in water and dirt. Keep them above paving level where possible.
- Use fixings with a coating that matches the frame, or stainless steel, to avoid early rust streaks.
Spans, Posts and Wind
- Wider spans need deeper beams or more posts. Ask where every post goes before you sign.
- Wind lifts carport roofs more than it pushes them down. Footings and roof fixings must hold against uplift.
- Highveld summer storms bring hail and strong gusts. Coastal sites get steady high winds.
- For large, cantilever or commercial carports, ask for an engineer-designed structure.
