Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African carport and building-cost websites, checked 14 October 2026 and rounded. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. Ranges are Johannesburg supply-and-install prices for the structure and roof. Slabs, approvals, gutters on some quotes and removal of an old carport can be extra. One source notes Sandton sits towards the top of its ranges and some East and West Rand addresses may carry a delivery charge. The sources mostly do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Choosing a Carport for Johannesburg
Hail
Shade net gives little protection against Highveld hail and can tear. Steel sheeting protects cars but can dent; thicker sheets (around 0.5 mm) dent less. If you choose polycarbonate, ask for a hail-rated grade.
Storms and wind
Summer thunderstorms bring heavy downpours and gusts. Ask for extra roof fixings at the edges, footings designed for uplift, and gutters and downpipes big enough to cope.
Sun
A shadeport keeps cars cooler than bare steel sheeting. Steel roofs with an insulated or anti-condensation layer reduce heat and drips.
Approval in Johannesburg
- An open-sided carport of up to 40 m² is minor building work under the National Building Regulations, but you still apply before building.
- The City of Johannesburg handles this through its building control office, which has an exemption application for minor works.
- Larger carports, and those over a building line or servitude, normally need full plans.
- Addresses in Ekurhuleni, Mogale City or other neighbouring municipalities apply to that municipality instead.
- Estates and sectional title complexes usually need HOA or body corporate approval as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a carport cost in Johannesburg?
Johannesburg price guides put a single shade net carport at about R4,500 - R7,500 and a double steel carport with an IBR roof at about R14,000 - R22,000 installed. Your own quotes depend on size, roof and site.
Is a shadeport enough in Johannesburg?
For sun, yes. For hail, no. Shade net can tear and lets hail through, so cars parked outside in summer storms are better under a solid roof.
Do I need approval for a carport in Johannesburg?
Yes, in most cases. Small open carports can qualify as minor building work, but you still apply to the City of Johannesburg before building. Larger carports need full plans, and estates have their own rules.
Can I claim for hail damage to my carport?
Many home insurance policies cover storm and hail damage. Photograph the damage and ask the repairer for an itemised quote.
How long does installation take in Johannesburg?
A standard single or double carport is often installed in a day or two once footings have set. Approval and estate sign-off usually take longer than the work itself.
