Shade net and shade cloth are knitted high-density polyethylene (HDPE) fabric, sold by shade percentage. A shadeport is the finished structure: frame, net and fixings. A "shade net carport" is the same thing.

Frame Designs
- Four-post (standard). Cheapest and simplest.
- Cantilever. Posts on one side only, so no posts at the front.
- Wall-mounted. One side fixed to the house or boundary wall.
- Dome or curved. Arched frame that sheds wind well.
- Tensile or sail. Shaped fabric on masts and cables.
Shade Coverage
A shadeport only shades the ground under it when the sun is high. Morning and afternoon sun comes in from the sides, so add overhang on the east and west sides or a side drop if your cars stand there all day.
Rain and Hail Limitations
- Ordinary shade net is not waterproof. Light rain drips through and heavy rain passes straight through.
- Hail can tear worn net and dent cars through it.
- Leaves and dirt collect on flat nets and can rot or sag them.
- If rain cover matters, choose a solid roof such as IBR sheeting.

Is a shadeport waterproof?
No. Ordinary shade net lets rain through. Only PVC-coated membranes shed water, and they cost more. For rain cover, choose a solid-roof carport.
What shade percentage should I choose?
Higher percentages block more sun and UV. For cars, installers commonly offer around 80% to 95%. Ask for the rating and UV warranty in writing.
How long does shade net last?
It depends on fabric grade, colour, sun exposure and tension. Expect to replace the net at some point while the frame keeps going.
Will a shadeport protect against hail?
Only partly. Net can slow small hail, but large hail can tear it and dent cars underneath.
Shadeport or carport?
A shadeport is cheaper and cooler underneath. A solid-roof carport costs more but keeps rain, hail and bird droppings off.
