Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African carport and building-cost websites, checked 14 October 2026 and rounded. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. The regional guide gives supply prices for Durban and KZN; installation is often extra (about R2,100 single and R3,100 double on the same guide). Job estimates are user-submitted and not confirmed, and run higher. Slabs and approvals are extra. The sources mostly do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Sloping Driveways
- Posts are cut to different lengths so the roof can stay level or follow the slope.
- Roof water must drain away from the garage and the neighbour's property.
- Footings on a slope may need to go deeper. Ask how they are designed.
- See custom carports for awkward sites.
Older Homes
- Altering a building older than 60 years can need a permit under the National Heritage Resources Act. Check before attaching a carport to an older house.
- Fixing to old walls or roofs needs care: confirm the wall can take the load and the junction is properly flashed.
- A freestanding carport avoids touching the house at all.
Matching the House
- Pre-painted sheeting or powder-coated frames can match existing roofs and window frames.
- Aluminium and timber carports suit some architectural styles better than plain steel.
- Ask for a drawing or photo of a similar finished carport before you sign.
Weather to Plan For
- Heavy summer downpours: gutters and downpipes must cope and water must drain away.
- Humidity: choose hot-dip galvanised or coastal-grade coatings and matching fixings.
- Storm gusts: footings and roof fixings must resist uplift.
- Hail is more common inland, around Pietermaritzburg and the upper highway.
Approval in Morningside Durban
- An open-sided carport of up to 40 m² is minor building work under the National Building Regulations, but you still apply before building.
- Morningside Durban falls under the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Apply to eThekwini's building control department.
- Larger carports, and carports over a building line or servitude, normally need full plans.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a carport cost in Morningside Durban?
A regional guide puts metal carports in Durban and KZN at about R9,000 single and R13,500 double before installation, and user-submitted job estimates put a double solid-roof carport at about R35,000. Your quotes depend on size, roof and site.
Do I need approval for a carport in Morningside Durban?
Yes, in most cases. Small open carports can qualify as minor building work, but you still apply to the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality before building. Larger carports need full plans.
Can a carport be built on a steep driveway in Morningside Durban?
Yes. Posts are cut to different heights and the footings and drainage are designed for the slope. Expect a site visit before a firm price.
Does my older house affect a carport in Morningside Durban?
It can. Altering a building older than 60 years may need a heritage permit, and old walls must be checked before anything is fixed to them. A freestanding carport avoids both issues.
Will a shade net carport survive hail in Morningside Durban?
Small hail usually, large hail often not. Worn net tears easily. If hail protection matters, choose steel sheeting or hail-rated polycarbonate.
