| Size | Notes |
|---|---|

| About 5 m x 5.5 m | Common shadeport size |
| About 6 m x 5 m | Wider, shorter bay |
| 6 m x 6 m | Popular all-round size, about 36 m² |
Dimensions vary between installers. A 6 m x 6 m carport is 36 m², under the 40 m² minor building work threshold, but most municipalities still want an application.
Side by Side or Tandem
| Layout | Typical size | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Side by side | About 5-6 m wide x 5-6 m deep | Wide driveways; both cars move freely |
| Tandem (nose to tail) | About 3 m wide x 12 m deep | Long, narrow driveways; front car blocks the back one |
Door Clearance and Posts
- Allow room between the two cars to open doors on both sides.
- A middle post saves on beam size but can get in the way of doors.
- A clear span with no middle post needs a deeper beam and costs more.
- A cantilever carport removes posts from one side entirely.
- Check the garage door, gate motor and turning space before posts are set.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African carport and building-cost websites, checked 14 October 2026 and rounded. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. Ranges cover the structure, roof and installation. Slabs, approvals, gutters and coating upgrades can be extra. The sources mostly do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a double carport?
Common sizes are about 5 m x 5 m up to 6 m x 6 m for side-by-side parking, and about 3 m x 12 m for tandem. Sizes vary by installer.
Is a 6x6 carport big enough for two cars?
For most cars and many SUVs, yes. With two large bakkies or wide doors, ask about a wider bay or a clear span without a middle post.
How much does a 6x6 carport cost?
Published guides put a 6 m x 6 m shadeport at roughly R8,400 - R14,000 and a 6 m x 6 m steel carport with an IBR roof at roughly R14,000 - R35,000 installed.
Does a double carport need plans?
A 6 m x 6 m carport is 36 m², which is within the 40 m² minor building work category for open-sided carports. Most municipalities still require an application, and larger carports need plans.
Side by side or tandem?
Side by side lets either car leave freely. Tandem suits narrow plots but the front car must move first.
