Carports South Africa: the main carport types, materials, sizes and repair options in one place, so you know what to ask for before you compare installation quotes.
- Pick the roof first: solid sheeting keeps rain and hail off, shade net only blocks sun.
- Pick the frame next: galvanised or powder-coated steel, aluminium or treated timber.
- Size it for the vehicles you actually park, with room to open the doors.

Get Carport QuotesCarport Types Compared
| Type | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Steel carports | Rain, hail and sun cover for most homes | Coating must suit coastal or industrial air |
| IBR roof carports | Low-cost solid roof on a steel frame | Can drip condensation and is noisy in rain |
| Aluminium carports | Coastal sites and low maintenance | Confirm whether the frame or only the roof is aluminium |
| Wooden carports | Matching timber houses and gardens | Needs regular sealing |
| Shadeports | Sun and UV cover at lower cost | Shade net is not waterproof |
| Cantilever carports | Driveways where front posts get in the way | Larger footings and engineering |
| Solar carports | Generating electricity over parking | Panels and electrical work are a separate scope |
Sizes and Layouts
- Single carports cover one vehicle, often around 3 m x 5 m to 3 m x 6 m.
- Double carports cover two vehicles side by side, often around 5 m x 5 m to 6 m x 6 m, or nose to tail as a tandem.
- Custom carports handle caravans, boats, sloping sites and odd shapes.
- Commercial carports cover rows of bays at offices, complexes, schools and depots.
Sizes are not standard. Each installer works to its own module, so compare the actual dimensions on each quote.
Roofing Options
Steel sheeting
IBR and corrugated profiles in galvanised, aluminium-zinc coated or pre-painted steel. Waterproof and hail-resistant, but noisy in rain and prone to condensation drips without an underlay.
Polycarbonate
Lets light through. Costs more than steel sheeting and needs UV-protected sheets and correct expansion gaps at fixings.
Shade net
Knitted HDPE fabric that blocks most sun and lets air through. Light rain still gets through and heavy hail can tear it.
How Installation Works
- Measure and check the site. Vehicle sizes, boundary distances, slope, drainage and where posts can go.
- Design and approval. Size, roof and finish are agreed. The installer or owner handles the municipal submission where needed.
- Footings. Posts are cast into concrete or bolted to base plates on a suitable slab.
- Frame. Posts, beams and purlins go up, square and level.
- Roof. Sheeting or net is fixed, with flashing, gutters and downpipes where the roof is solid.
- Handover. Check fixings, falls and clearances before the final payment.
Approval and Building Rules
The National Building Regulations list an open-sided carport of up to 40 m² as minor building work. That usually means a simpler process, not no process: municipalities generally still want an application or notice with a sketch plan before work starts. Building lines, servitudes, heritage areas and estate or body corporate rules apply on top of that. Requirements differ by municipality and project, so check with your local building control office.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African carport and building-cost websites, checked 14 October 2026 and rounded. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. The ranges cover supply and installation of the structure and roof. Slabs, approvals, removal of an old carport and long-distance transport are usually extra. The sources mostly do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest type of carport?
A shade net shadeport on a steel frame is usually the lowest-cost option. A steel frame with an IBR roof costs more but keeps rain and hail off.
Do I need plans for a carport?
An open-sided carport of up to 40 m² is minor building work under the National Building Regulations, but most municipalities still want an application with a sketch plan before you build. Larger carports, or ones near a boundary or in a heritage area, may need full plans.
Steel or aluminium carport near the sea?
Both can work. Steel needs hot-dip galvanising or a coastal-grade coating system. Aluminium does not rust, but the fixings and any steel parts still need to suit coastal air.
How long does carport installation take?
A standard single or double carport is often installed in a day or two once footings have cured. Custom, cantilever and commercial carports take longer.
Can a carport be attached to my house?
Yes, as a lean-to fixed to the wall or fascia, if the wall or roof structure can take the load. The junction needs proper flashing so water does not run into the wall.
