Common thicknesses run from about 0.4 mm to 0.5 mm. Thicker sheets resist hail dents and foot traffic better.
Roof Pitch
IBR suits low-pitched carport roofs, but every product has a minimum pitch set by the manufacturer. Too flat and water backs up at the laps. Check the data sheet for the exact sheet, and make sure the fall takes water away from the house and neighbours.
Fixings
- Self-drilling screws with sealing washers, fixed through the crests of the ribs.
- Screw coating matched to the sheet, or the screws rust first.
- Enough fixings at roof edges and ends, where wind uplift is highest.
- Side laps placed away from the prevailing wind and rain.
Drainage
- Gutters and downpipes so water does not pour onto paving, cars or walls.
- Flashing where a lean-to roof meets the house wall.
- Ends of sheets turned up (stop-ended) at the high side on low pitches.
Condensation
On cold, clear nights moisture condenses under bare steel sheets and drips onto cars, leaving marks. An anti-condensation backing or a thin insulation layer under the sheets reduces this. Ask for it if the carport covers cars overnight.
