Aluminium Carports South Africa: aluminium does not rust, so it suits coastal properties and low-maintenance designs. The term is used loosely, though, so check exactly which parts are aluminium before comparing quotes.
- Some "aluminium carports" are steel frames with aluminium roofing.
- Some are aluminium-zinc coated steel, which is still steel.

| What it is | Frame | Roof | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium structural frame | Aluminium extrusions | Aluminium, polycarbonate or other sheeting | Section sizes and wind rating |
| Aluminium roof sheeting | Usually steel | Aluminium sheeting | How the steel frame is protected |
| Aluminium-zinc coated steel | Steel | Steel sheeting with an Al-Zn coating | It is steel, not aluminium |
What to Confirm in the Specification
- Frame material. Aluminium extrusion or steel. Ask for section sizes and wall thickness.
- Roof material and thickness. Aluminium sheet, Al-Zn coated steel or polycarbonate.
- Fixings. Stainless steel or isolated fixings. Aluminium touching ordinary steel can corrode at the contact point.
- Finish. Mill, anodised or powder-coated, and the colour.
- Design. Aluminium is lighter and more flexible than steel, so larger spans need deeper sections or more posts.
- Warranty. Which warranty comes from the profile or sheet manufacturer, and which from the installer.
Coastal and Inland Use
Aluminium forms its own oxide layer and does not rust, which is its main advantage within reach of sea spray. Salt still stains unwashed surfaces and attacks unsuitable fixings. Inland, a well-galvanised steel carport often gives similar life at a lower price.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African carport and building-cost websites, checked 14 October 2026 and rounded. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. Few guides price aluminium separately, so treat these as rough. Installed status is not always stated, and designer or imported systems cost more. The sources mostly do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are aluminium carports better than steel?
Near the sea, often yes, because aluminium does not rust. Inland, galvanised steel is usually cheaper and stiffer. The specification matters more than the label.
Is Zincalume-type sheeting aluminium?
No. Aluminium-zinc coated sheeting is steel with a coating containing aluminium and zinc. It resists corrosion better than plain galvanised sheet but is still steel.
Can aluminium carports handle wind?
Yes, if designed for it. Aluminium bends more than steel, so spans, post spacing and footings must be designed for local wind loads.
Do aluminium carports need painting?
No, but many are powder-coated or anodised for colour. Mill-finish aluminium dulls to grey over time.
