Inspect the Frame First
- Purlins rusted at fixing points must be replaced, or new screws will not hold.
- Check beams for sag and posts for rust at the base.
- A heavier roof, or a change from net to sheeting, needs the frame and footings checked for load and wind uplift.
- Extra purlins may be needed if the new sheets span less than the old ones.

- Fit new sheets with correct laps and fixings.
- Fit new flashing where the roof meets a wall.
- Replace or reseat gutters and downpipes.
- Clean up swarf (metal filings) so it does not rust-stain the new roof or your car.

Can I put a solid roof on my shadeport frame?
Only if the frame and footings can carry sheeting and its wind load. Shadeport frames are often too light. Ask for an assessment before ordering sheets.
Is it cheaper to replace the roof or the whole carport?
If the frame is sound, replacing the roof is usually much cheaper. If the frame is badly rusted, a new carport can be better value.
How long does a carport roof replacement take?
A single or double carport is often re-roofed in a day once materials are on site, longer if purlins need replacing.
Should I change to polycarbonate?
Polycarbonate lets light in and does not rust, but costs more and can scratch, yellow or crack if low-grade. Specify UV-protected sheets.
Will insurance pay for a hail-damaged carport roof?
Many home policies cover storm and hail damage. Photograph the damage and get an itemised quote for your insurer.
